Empowering Patients to Recover Fully from Life-Altering Health Changes

From her home office in Pittsburgh, PA, Paula Franetti consults one of her clients about an upcoming knee replacement surgery. She designed her business, Rebound Planner, LLC, as a health recovery and patient engagement program that coaches ordinary people through common surgeries like knee, hip, and shoulder replacements, ligament repairs, and spinal surgeries, as well as accidents, injuries, and acute illnesses.

Paula’s online programs use video lessons, telephonic coaching, and worksheets to enable clients to stay focused on reaching their health and well-being goals despite the setbacks they face.

By 2018, approximately 700,000 total knee replacements occur each year in the U.S., making it one of the most common joint replacement procedures alongside hip replacements (source).

Rebound Planner provides very practical tools that materialize Paula’s vision of a web-based (and eventually, mobile) application to empower patients to take ownership of their recovery from the very start of a medical treatment plan. The three phases of the Rebound Planner Series use self-discovery methods to help patients increase their intrinsic motivation for getting well, and to drive a realistic plan for reaching their personal wellness goals. The Rebound Planner Series covers three phases of recovery from surgery, through rehab, into the release from medical care.  Completely Readyisa pre-surgery mindset planner that thoroughly prepares a patient for a successful surgery experience. Full Reboundis a monthly telephonic coaching package that educates and motivates clients during their rehab. Better Than Everis a practical application and mindset planner that guides clients in integrating their healing into a new and healthier lifestyle.

The idea for Rebound Planner came from Paula’s own extensive recovery from a near-fatal automobile accident at age 60; a speeding driver ran the red light and slammed into her driver side door, nearly folding her car in half and pushing it forty feet past the intersection. Within the first three days in ICU she underwent four life-saving surgical procedures and learned that she would possibly need two years to fully recover from the extent of her injuries.

While going through a long and complicated recovery, Paula realized that the healthcare system isn’t designed to provide patients with motivation. As a serial entrepreneur, she saw the opportunity to create a coaching tool to fill the emotional and physical gap that patients face when dealing with what feels like the insurmountable challenges of recovery.

Paula also recognized that her background in rehab, health coaching, and fitness, gave her an advantage most patients wouldn’t have to recover. She wanted to use her knowledge and first-hand patient experience to help ordinary people get the recovery outcomes they wanted. So, she wrote a book, Driving Force, that shares the six principles she used to make her remarkable recovery. The success of the book enabled her to map out and develop content for the Rebound Planner Series that launched in 2019.

In April 2019, Paul joined Impatient Entrepreneurs, her eforever group that’s based in Wilkinsburg, PA, and has continued to innovate the Rebound Planner Series and coach more clients. Paula had been approached by other business owner groups and hadn’t found a community that could support her business needs. But when she attended her first eforever meeting, she saw the tremendous value of her new peer group

“My group quickly felt comfortable and trustworthy, even though these other business owners, like myself, were developing really innovative ideas in their businesses.  Sharing our ideas felt risky at first. But over time our trust grew. And the more we shared the better we could understand each other’s struggles, which started more ideas flowing about how we can solve business issues.”

In 2021, Paula released her own video series called, “What Do You Think Moments,” which echoes Rebound Planner’s philosophy: thoughts are powerful, and through intentional, directed thinking, individuals can create their desired health and wellbeing. During the isolating Covid-19 pandemic, Paula gained deeper insights into how her thoughts play a powerful role in creating her life. In the series, she shares “everyday examples of the insights that [she] gains from [her] thoughts” and invites viewers to reflect on their own. Watch the first episode of Paula’s series below:
